IHSA National Championships

DAY 1
On Thursday, May 6th, competition began for the IHSA National Championship title at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington Kentucky. Skidmore riders would compete both as a team and individually. Additionally, Skidmore brought down six horses to compete in the national competition.

Day 1 began with a bang for Skidmore College. With eight riders competing in eight different classes, Skidmore placed in every class. The day began with Individual Open Fences. In her Nationals debut, Flavia D’Urso (’13) rode beautifully and was called back to test. Overall, D’Urso placed 4th out of the 20 top open riders. Next, in the first team class of the day, Laura Roberts (’10) would ride in Team Novice Fences. This was Laura’s third trip to Nationals, and second trip as a Novice Fences rider. Taking Kentucky by storm, Roberts put in a spectacular trip on a tricky horse and was called back to test. Beating 18 other riders, Roberts placed second, giving Skidmore their first five points for the team total.

The rest of day one was filled with flat classes for the Skidmore Equestrian Team. Open Flat, Intermediate Flat, Novice Flat, and Walk-Trot-Canter Team Classes were held on the afternoon of day 1. In Team Open Flat, Kelly Campbell (’12) put in one of her best flat rides yet to secure Skidmore’s second red ribbon of the day. Following suit, both Chelsea Jones (’12) and Isabella McKeon (’12) placed Reserve Champion in Team Intermediate Flat and Team Walk-Trot-Canter, adding a total of ten more points to Skidmore’s team score. Jones would also compete on day 2 in Team Intermediate Fences. McKeon, in her Nationals debut, not only rode beautifully, but endured intense stirrupless testing to secure her second place win. Hanae Kimura (’11), in her third trip to IHSA Nationals, placed 10th in Team Novice Flat.

Individual riders for the afternoon were Grier Filley (’10) and Alex McGuire (’11). Filley put in a strong and lovely ride to secure a 5th place finish. McGuire finished off her class with a bang, winning the National Championship in Individual Walk-Trot-Canter.

At the end of day 1, Skidmore was in the lead with 20 points, followed by 2009 National Champions Centenary College (14 points), Findlay (13 points), Stonehill (11 points) and U Kentucky (11 points).

DAY 2
Skidmore began day 2 of Nationals as strong as they began day 1. Chelsea Jones (’12) competed in her second team class of the show – riding Skidmore’s own Best Boy. She put in a beautiful round and was called back for testing. Despite some slight mounted difficulties, she overcame her obstacles and secured five more points for Skidmore with her second win of the show. Overall, Jones contributed 10 points to Skidmore’s team score. Co-captain Elizabeth Kigin (’10) competed in both the fences and flat phases on the Cacchione Cup. Putting in one of her best rounds over fences, Kigin came out of the fences phase with a score of 88, placing her in second going into the flat phase. The only rider to top Kigin over fences scored an 89, riding Skidmore’s Leroy. Kigin will compete in the work-off phase of the Cacchione Cup tomorrow.

In the second-to-last team class of the National Championship, Cecie Culp (’11) competed in the Team Walk-Trot class on the afternoon of day 2. Riding a large palomino, she put in a strong ride in her IHSA debut, placing seventh.

DAY 3
Skidmore remains in first place going into day 3 of competition. With 25 points and one team class to go, Centenary College and Findlay are close at Skidmore’s heels with 20 points.

Day 3 of IHSA Nationals proved to be a busy day for Skidmore College. Co-captain Elizabeth Kigin (’10) would ride three more times, in Team Open Fences, Cacchione Work-Off, and Individual Open Flat. Kelly Campell (’12) would compete with Kigin in Individual Open Flat, the last class of the Hunt Seat portion of IHSA Nationals.

With the Skidmore Equestrian Team tensely watching, Kigin put in yet another spectacular round Saturday morning, getting a call-back for Team Open Fences. Kigin placed 4th, securing three points for Skidmore’s team score. As the final team class for IHSA Nationals, this class was the clincher for the National title – with the final four points, Skidmore came out on top, with 28 points, thus winning the IHSA National Championship Title. Reserve Champions were Centenary College and Findlay, both tied with 20 points.

Though the team competition was done for the day, the day was not over for Skidmore riders or horses. Kigin competed in both the work-off phase of the Cacchione Cup and Individual Open Flat. Continuing her reign over the competition, Kigin came out in 6th place in the Cacchione Cup and won the Individual Open Flat Championship. This win was Skidmore’s second Individual Championship of the show. Kelly Campbell (’12) also rode in Individual Open Flat, putting in a beautiful round and placing 7th out of the top 20 riders.

At the end of day 3, Skidmore College came out the reigning champions – CONGRATULATIONS to the Skidmore Equestrian Team, the 2010 IHSA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!
